The first mistake is in the approach. Too many young scholars approach higher education as if it is a necessary burden.
College is simply a business opportunity, a profitable one if approached correctly.
I graduated high school in 2006 with authentic intentions: go to college and get a good job. I didn’t initially care about the wealth of knowledge available and the transformation of my ideals and beliefs. I acknowledged college as being the most accessable door to securing a career that would bring me personal fulfilment and financial satisfaction. So I approached college with these desires in mind.
I primarily have been focusing on positioning as a student. I am studying economics as an undergrad primarily because I know I can work in any field of business and government I please with a B.S. in Business Economics. My degree does not place limitations on my professional aspirations. With my background, I can go to law school, get an MBA, start a career in management or consulting, open my own business, and a list of other things.
School is not my only hustle. I still have to provide for myself and gain experience that proves I am capable of perfoming professionally. I have worked as a students assistant, cook, medical records clerk, catering server, and a management intern while in college. Also I have served in numerous leadership positions in on-campus organizations. I try do what’s necessary plus more.

The resume is just a preview. The interview is the show..gif)
I have participated in a quite a few interviews in the past couple of years, and I have learned from doing. I no longer feel ridiculously nervous in face-to-face interviews with hiring managers. I just acknowledge them as another human being in the room. The worst thing they can do is not invite me to join their team. It is not the end of the world. I know the right opportunity will come my way regardless. It takes a balance of confidence and comfort to walk into an interview with this attitude.
However, you never want to come off too confident or too comfortable. Your resume has sparked the HR managers attention and they apparently see something on that piece of paper that interests them. You should be comfortable in your abilities and past experiences, and therefore be comfortable in your delivery. It is important to be relaxed and cool in the interview. You want to convey your interest in the position to the HR rep, but you do not ever want to seem over eager. Balance is essential.
Know your stuff. Most of the interview is going to be focused on you. All of the interviews I have participated in since being in college have been structured around behavioral or situational experiences. For example, I was recently asked in an interview, describe a situation in which you did not complete an assignment at the assigned deadline. This question was a breeze because I immediately thought of an incident that complimented my qualities. Aside from being on-point about yourself, be well-informed about the company you are interviewing with. Take the time to research what the company does, how it does it, and how successful it is in efforts.
Lastly, know that you are in control. Own the interview.

This image is the background on my computer. It is a constant reminder.
No New Year’s Resolution…
Just continued success by abiding by a simple philosophy…
God has blessed each and every single one of us with our own unique gift. We each have the ability to do something, whether we recognize it or not, very well. It is our obligation to discover and acknowledge that gift by applying it in our lives.
Most of us with any since of purpose are searching for ways to succeed. The search is over when we acknowledge God’s gift to us as our gift to the world. The gifts that God blesses us with in life are our guides to our ultimate destination.
In everything I try to accomplish in life I try to do it in accordance to God’s blessings. For example, God has blessed me with intellectual savvy or just a pure ability and desire to learn. This blessing has made it possible for me to attend college, a blessing within itself which has opened many more windows of opportunity.
Basically I continue to take each gift that God blesses me with and use it as a compass to direct me in all my pursuits. So my recommendation to you all in this new year is to trust in the supreme being in your life. Accept His gifts to you as a guide to fulfilling your dreams and your purpose.
