My Letter to a Young Sister (or Brother) First Edition
Dear One,
I see you everyday taking your steps, carefree as you maneuver through life. You are not worried about tomorrow; you are just embracing today. And honestly that is fine; you have all of your adult life to worry about nothing. Now is the perfect time to take it easy because sooner than later you’ll feel as if the whole world is on your shoulders. So just chill, take in the world as it comes to you. Enjoy life’s simple pleasures: running, jumping, laughing, and climbing. It is okay for you to just be a kid.
Don’t rush to grow up; let this inevitable process take its natural time to occur. The moment will come for you to put away childish things and pickup your piece of the world’s burden. Maybe you are already carrying your cross, I don’t know. But if you are not, be thankful and preserve this time while you can.
Being young is not a pass to be a fool. You still have to be smart and make good decisions. At a certain age you began to understand those lessons of right from wrong, good from bad. Your mother taught you not to take what does not belong to you, work hard for what you want. Your father explained the need for you to take pride in yourself, keep your head to the sky. And it was your grandmother who embedded that golden rule into your heart: do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. You have what it takes to do great things. It is your responsibility to utilize your understanding as you encounter difficult situations and pressing decisions throughout life.
Relax this is your time. Before you know it, this will all be gone. Always think, do this for yourself. Avoid trouble when you can. You are capable of making good decisions because you are smart and equipped with understanding. Even when others challenge you, trust in the good sense God gave you.
Make yourself proud.
Sincerely,
Demetra A. Allen
