March Goals

3 03 2010

Last month I had one objective: to secure a volunteer opportunity. I have not started volunteering but I have targeted a good prospect.

I want to ultimately do some work in the public sector, specifically with disadvantaged youth. One of my primary goals for March is to begin tutoring at a local elementary school. I feel before I can make a career move in the public sector, I have to donate my time and skills to the cause I am passionate about.

My second goal for March is to stay focused academically. I am graduating this spring, and I don’t want to let my guard down and begin slacking in my work just because the end is near.

Lastly, another goal of mine is to save money to move after graduation. I want to move not only to change my surroundings, but to place myself in a better position to secure a job and make the best career move.

Maneuver Upon the Blessing

2 01 2010

This image is the background on my computer. It is a constant reminder.

No New Year’s Resolution…

Just continued success by abiding by a simple philosophy…

God has blessed each and every single one of us with our own unique gift. We each have the ability to do something, whether we recognize it or not, very well. It is our obligation to discover and acknowledge that gift by applying it in our lives.

Most of us with any since of purpose are searching for ways to succeed. The search is over when we acknowledge God’s gift to us as our gift to the world. The gifts that God blesses us with in life are our guides to our ultimate destination.

In everything I try to accomplish in life I try to do it in accordance to God’s blessings. For example, God has blessed me with intellectual savvy or just a pure ability and desire to learn. This blessing has made it possible for me to attend college, a blessing within itself which has opened many more windows of opportunity.

Basically I continue to take each gift that God blesses me with and use it as a compass to direct me in all my pursuits. So my recommendation to you all in this new year is to trust in the supreme being in your life. Accept His gifts to you as a guide to fulfilling your dreams and your purpose.

Effectiveness in Social Innovation and Non-Profit Management

7 12 2009

A reoccurring theme in social innovation and non-profit conversations  is effectiveness. With the announcement of the United States Social Innovation Fund, and the current economic downturn, non-profit executives, entrepreneurs, and social advocates have been reinforcing the importance of fulfilling social missions effectively.

Like many other industries, the social sector has had to cope with cuts in funding. One of the methods of doing so has been only focusing on services in which an organization effectively serves its consumers. Everyone including the President of the United States is in agreeance that it is not a good strategy for agencies to continue to dedicate funding and time to areas with inadequate performance  and ineffective services. Therefore, many experts believe social agencies should direct their consumers to other agencies that can help them  in the areas in for which their  resources cannot effectively contribute.

Also at this point, firms with social missions are being discouraged from expanding away from their core mission. It is important for non-profits to focus their resources on finding smarter ways to serve the needs of their clients which fall under their mission statement. Efficiency on the operations level of an organziaton can lead to a more effective product for the consumer. It does not reflect well on an organization’s management when available resources are not being allocated to improving a firm’s current services.

Effective service is essential to any organization with a social mission. If an organization is not serving its clientele effectively, it is not fulfilling its mission at all. The goal has to be to  isolate the effective areas of the organization and discontinue the inadequate areas.
