Social Innovation in the U.S. Pt. 2: Impact Makers

2 11 2009

There are several organizations out there putting the concept of social innovation to practice in the United Sates such as Impact Makers, a non-stock, health care management consulting firm. Impact Makers is a competitive firm that battles head-to-head with other consulting firms for contracts. It wins most of these battles because of the firm’s high degree of competence and level of success.

Impact Makers charges market rates for their services, and pays their employees competitive wages. All of Impact Makers’ profits go to its non-profit partners, such as the free clinics of Virginia. The company is a for-profit organization with no ownership; the employees maximize profits for the community. Their objective is to raise funds so that their non-profit partners can focus their efforts on delivering high quality services to the community instead of on fundraising. The organization also focuses on providing free medication to the uninsured and free consulting to its medical partners. In 2008, Impact reported $300,000 in revenue and it expects to double that figure in 2009.

Impact Makers is registered as a B Corporation. As a B Corporation, Impact Makers focuses on combating social issues with business methods.

Start-up Update

3 08 2009

I have finally narrowed down a name for my start-up and written down all the core concepts for the business. I don’t want to reveal to much about the details of the company at this stage, but it falls under the social enterprise umbrella.

I respect the aggressive nature of sports agents and entertainment managers and have a special interest in youth development programs. So this project combines the business side of managing professionals and the social mission of developing disadvantaged youth.

My plan is to initiate the company online and build momentum as I prepare for the  actual physical launch of the company in my city of choice. The next step is working on the business plan.

Feel free to leave any advice about starting a business or writing a business plan, it would be greatly appreciated.
